A week had passed since the riot within the small POW camp but still Thomas had not recieved permission from the resident doctor in rejoining the exercise periods that was mandatory for all prisoners. Whilst Thomas sulked about having to sit out so that his side could properly heal, most of his comrades secretly wished that they were in his position. After all, who in their right mind really wanted to be out in the desert heat exercising?

Only a footballer.

Looking around to make sure no one could see him, Thomas snuck around the back of one of the tents, his football clutched against his chest. He might not get to do any of the drills, but a few harmless kicks surely wouldn't ruin anything, would they?

Selecting his quiet spot, Thomas practiced trapping the ball by bouncing it off of a crate. This lasted only for a few moments as Thomas spied something of interest. A clothes line was strung between the tents with fresh laundry hung to dry. Off to the right was an empty spot, perfect for the curving cross kick. Thomas grinned and took aim.

The first shot landed directly in one of the tunics, bringing it down. Thomas cringed as he trotted after the ball. He muttered an apology, knowing that had that been a footballer, he would have got a proper smack in the face and that would have hurt. Lining the ball up for a second attempt, Thomas focused on the spot on the ball that he had to strike before charging it. This time the ball arched beautifully around the empty spot on the line and curved right around to the centre, immediately striking something right behind it.

Jack was sitting in about the only shade outside that day, which happened to be behind the laundry line. Troy had said that he was crazy for sitting out there but he didn't want to stay inside a building or tent that had no breeze whatsoever. Although the outdoors wasn't much different.

He took out his writing materials that he brought with him and began a letter home. There wasn't much to say. After a few minutes Jack gave up and that is when the ball hit a crate beside him. There were several of these scattered throughout the camp.

The ball rolled off to a stop and he chuckled. There was only one person in the camp who owned a football. Jack thought of Thomas. He grabbed it and threw over the clothes line. With luck it would bounce back to the younger man.

Thomas had just started trotting after the ball when it came up and over the clothes line. Catching it against his chest, Thomas trapped the ball on the ground. Nothing had been said, so maybe it was just another German prisoner who didn't mind his antics.

"Entschuldigung!" Thomas shouted by way of apology, glad that what he hit wasn't a person. That would have eliminated all hopes of finding someone to play against.

Dribbling the ball a little, Thomas forgot about the clothes line for a bit and contented himself with just going over some basic drills. His side wasn't hurting him nearly as much as it had the day before, but Thomas knew that he still had to take it easy. He glanced back over at the clothes line and thought for a moment. Maybe this other person was bored too?

"Wollen Sie spielen Fußball mit mir?" he asked loudly enough for Moffitt to hear. Backing up from the ball, Thomas lined up for another curving cross and sent it through the same spot.

Jack nodded to himself when he heard the apology. Apparently he go the ball back. "Es ist fein."

That seemed to be the end of it so he sat back down and continued writing. He stopped for a moment and absentmindedly began tapping his pen against the ground, keeping time to a song in his head. Eventually he came to the end of it and staring off into space.

"Ja möchte ich spielen" Jack replied, giving the ball a kick back. He debated on if he should come on the other side of the line or just stay where he was so Thomas could have more practice.

The voice sounded very familar to Thomas.

Catching the ball easily, Thomas brought it away from the clothes line and prepared for another kick, but this time he decided to aim for the opening he had earlier made. The ball went through its mark with neat precision. If that didn't get the other soldier's attention, Thomas wasn't sure what would.

However, if Thomas had recognised the voice correctly, he had little to fear. Trotting over, Thomas stuck his head through the clothing and grinned at Moffitt.

"Guten Tag! Wie geht's es Ihnen?" Of all the people in the camp, Moffitt was the most friendly and accepting, even amongst the Germans. Not many had held a grudge against him, considering that he had been put in a bad way and betrayed by his own comrades. Thomas was also too young to be considered a threat by anyone, unless they of course, hated football.

Continuing in German, Thomas asked, "Why are you still here? I thought you would have been long gone by now! Is everyone okay?" He snuck around the clothes and tried to steal the ball away from Moffitt, suddenly grabbing at his injured side but making no indication that he was in any real pain. Sometimes it acted up and sometimes, the stitches just plain itched.

Jack wasn't expecting the ball to come out where it did. He went after it and dribbled it back. He returned greetings with a chuckle. "Hallo! Ich bin gut. Wie geht es Ihnen?"

"Everyone is fine" Jack replied, trying to keep a hold of the ball. "We did leave but one of the jeeps was having trouble and we had to come back." He stopped. "Are you sure that you should be playing so soon?" Jack knew all to well how bothersome stitches could be. He had them before due to some injury from fighting.

"Mir geht's gut," replied Thomas with a nod of his head. He gestured at his side and said, "Aber, es tut weh, hier."

Thomas sighed and scratched the back of his head absently, suddenly looking very sheepish as Moffitt inquired about him playing too soon. There was no use in lying, as he was the only one directly affected by his injury. Slowly he nodded his head.

"Ja, ja...ich... mein Arzt sagt, ich soll weniger Fußball spielen." For a moment Thomas became quiet as though reconsidering what he was doing there, but then the familar playful glimmer returned to his eyes and he charged Moffitt, easily snatching the ball away from him and kicking it at the crate.

"I am glad that you're back! At least it means another day without fear of dying out there, right?" He kicked the ball back towards Moffitt and smiled at him. "So, who were you writing too? Don't you want to finish your letter?"

"Ich bin froh, es zu hören." Jack saw where he motioned. "It's going to hurt for a while longer" he informed him. He wasn't going to mention that playing football was probably going to make it worse. It seemed to be the only thing that helped the younger man.

He watched him and then threw up his hands in mock anger when Thomas stole the ball. Jack couldn't keep a grin from his face, though. "That's the last time I let my guard down" he remarked, trying to get it back. Jack nodded his head in agreement. "Yes, one less day of being out there."

"My family..." He stopped the ball with the side of his foot and glanced back at where he left his belongings. For a moment he remembered home. The familiar sights, sounds, and things that he especially missed. Then mentally shook his head and kicked the ball. "I can't think of anything to say right now. I'll write more later."

"But how much longer?" Thomas asked, his voice drawing into a slight whine that indicated just how young and impatient he really was. "I want to play football, not stay on my back all the time and sleep."

He wanted to say more but held off as he knew that perhaps now wasn't the right time to vent. Besides, it was clear that he had interrupted Moffitt in letter writing. Thomas smirked when Moffitt went after the ball and though he knew that despite the injury, he could keep it from Moffitt, he let his new friend have the ball.

"It just takes practice," said Thomas with a smile, though it faltered when Moffitt mentioned his family. He asked curiously, "What do you think your mother would have to say about this? You playing football with a German?"

Thomas waited patiently for Moffitt to pass the ball to him and for the next few minutes he contented himself with just simply passing it back and forth. He enjoyed the silence that fell between them, but then his side started hurting and he stumbled over to the crate.

"Why did this war have to start?" he asked weakly. "Why did everything have to get ruined? Aren't I supposed to be your enemy? Isn't your instinct to kill me? I was trained to kill, but I never could. All those speeches we heard, all that talk about German superiority," Thomas shook his head and wiped his eyes though there weren't any tears there. "I only stomached them so they would be satisfied and wouldn't hurt me. I pushed it all away by thinking about football. Whenever Hitler spoke, I just thought up game plays..."

Troy strode across the compound, anticipation and a touch of relief on his face. The intell they had bee waiting for had finally come in and Sorrison was ready to brief he and Moffitt on what they were about to tackle. it had taken him a half-hour to round up Pettigrew and Hitchcock and get them moving on requisitioning supplies and making sure the jeeps and accompanying equipment were ready to roll. One of the jeeps had been giving them problems and had almost left Hitch and Troy stranded on patrol. Now he was off to find his 2IC, more than likely he would be with the young German whom he seemed to have developed a soft spot for.

He shook his head as he walked, he had warned the Brit not to get too close, that it would come back and bite him. Troy knew it from personal experience, a "friend" was how he ended up in the hands of Col. Beckman, he would bear the scars of that encounter both physical and mental for the rest of his life. He knew one detail of the mission, one that concerned him, that they were bringing that young German with them.

Thomas had just given the ball away to Moffitt when he saw Troy approaching. Though Troy had been kind to him, Thomas sensed mistrust. Not that he didn't blame him any, but Thomas felt a bit hurt by this. After all, hadn't he proven that he wasn't a terrible, evil Nazi that everyone thought that he was supposed to be when he helped the Rat Patrol fight off the riot?

For Thomas, he thought that anyone who exhibited such courage could automatically be trusted. However, Thomas was still quite young and very new to how the world really worked. All that Thomas ever cared about was football; living a good, honest life, and above all, make friends!

When Troy came up next to them, Thomas could scarcely smile. There was something about the way Troy looked that set Thomas uneasy. Perhaps it was an uncanny sense of knowing what was coming or perhaps just the mistrust that Troy issued him reflected.

Weary of anything that Troy might say or do, Thomas moved next to Moffitt as though hoping his new friend would be there for him if something bad was going to happen.

Troy frowned slightly when he saw the boy slide closer to Moffitt, whether it was for protection, reassurance or both he couldn't tell. He didn't mean to frighten the boy but he found it hard to trust anyone outside of the three men he risked his life with day in and day out.

"Play time's over Moffitt, Sorrison wants to see us. The mission is on tell your friend to start packing he's going for a ride, the ball stays here."

Moffitt nodded his head firmly before turning back to Thomas. After a quick exchange of words, Moffitt made it clear what Thomas was to do. The joy that had earlier been on the youngster's face was quickly replaced with pale fear. It was not likely that Moffitt would be able to tell him much about where they were going, but Thomas couldn't help but ask anyways.

"Even if I did know I wouldn't be able to tell you," replied Moffitt, wishing that there was a way he could offer some kind of reassurance.

Thomas looked at Troy and picked up his football. There was some hope in knowing that he'd have to leave the ball behind. Maybe they just needed to get away to talk about what had happened, or something... Reluctantly, Thomas left Moffitt and went to his tent.

After Thomas had left, Moffitt came up beside Troy and asked, "Why does he have to come along? What can he do?"

It was wrong of him, but Moffitt couldn't help but worry about what would happen to the kid. Thomas had been in his element kicking that silly ball around. The only thing Thomas seemed to want was someone to play against, a friend. Not an enemy and certainly not death. Still, Thomas was a German and Germans were the enemy, young or old. The innocence could not completely erase the fact that Thomas had been trained how to kill and still had to be seen as a soldier, not a kid.

Moffitt furrowed his brow and looked back at Troy. "What do you need me to do?"

Troy shook his head at Moffitt inquiry as to why Thomas was coming "You know as much as I do right now why they want the kid along but Sorrison says he's going so he goes. Hitch and Tully are requisitioning ammo, supplies and outfitting the jeeps, from what I can see we're gonna be out a while.' Troy paused and glanced at his watch "Sorrison wants us in his tent at 1430 that's twenty minutes to pack your gear and get over there. and Jack. . .' Troy sighed and looked his friend a meaningful look, "You might want to write a letter home, I told Hitch and Tully the same thing."

Turning Troy headed back to his tent, his gear lay on a neatly made cot, it was the only sign asside from his footlocker that indicated anyone lived here. A small make shift desk of crates and a thin piece of ply wood sat against the center pole a couple of sheets of blank paper and a couple of sharpened pencils. Troy walked over and sat down pulling a sheet to him he picked up a pencil and stared at the white emptyness, taking up a pencil he began to write: *Dear David, I don't know when this will catch up to you but I wanted to just say a few things in case I don't get another chance. First I know I haven't told you often enough just how proud I am of you going up in those crates, second how glad I am to have had you as a brother, even if you were a pain in the ass at times. . .'

Hitch and Tully stood in front of the quarter masters desk the tall lanky man looked the requistion forms over and raised his eyes in skeptical disbeleif "You gotta be kiddin' me where the hell you goin' China?" he asked the two privates.

Tully and Hitch exchanged innocent glances and shrugged "All we know is that Segeant Troy said get this stuff and have it loaded asap," Tuly said in a bland tone, shooting Hitch who was trying to keep a straight face, a warning look.

The Corporal stared at the paper, it was all in order and the signature from Capt. Sorrison was authentic. "Well then come give me a hand tah carry this stuff out."

Ten minutes later the two men were loading supplies into the two jeeps that the Rat Patrol had learned to call home, during the long stints of patroling the deep desert.

Sitting on his bunk, Thomas looked about him. Just what had Troy expected him to pack? When he was first captured he had nothing except his uniform. The second time though, Dietrich made sure that he had his football and cold weather jacket. Inside the pocket were Thomas's other favourite possession, his letters from home.

But now what was he supposed to do? Thinking for a moment, Thomas debated his options, then pulled out the remainder of his paper and wrote a short letter to both his mother and older sister. Once he finished this, he used the last sheet to write a letter to his favourite football club. He enclosed it in the envelope addressed to his mother, hoping that she would know what to do with it when she got it.

His club had to know just how much it meant to him during these times.

Picking up the ball, Thomas quit the tent and went back over to where he had last seen Moffitt, then proceeded to start kicking the ball around. If only all of life could be this simple.
