The German Soldier roared with pain, releasing Troy as he clapped his hands to his ears blood trickled between fingers of each hand from burst eardrums, blood streaming down his face from a broken nose. He crumbled to the ground the fight leaving the man in a hurry.

Troy scrambled away again, lungs heaving drawing in precious air, he groaned softly with each breath, although not life threatening broken ribs hurt like a son-of-a-bitch. He coughed, the heavy dust that filled the air choking him.

"Moffitt! Moffitt..say something." he shouted regretting the effort in drawing breath to do so.

Suddenly a hand grabbed his shoulder and Troy whirled around fist cocked back.

Mark Hitchcock sporting a bruised face and bloody lip grinned back at
his Sergeant "Easy there Sarg." he said holdin up his hands in surrender, a butter wont melt in my mouth grin on his face. "Thought you might need a little help."

The rapid chatter of a fifty cal racheted through the air and suddenly there were armed men driving the would be escapee's back.

+++++++++++++\

Tully almost immediately lost track of Hitch, shaking his head he turned in the direction he knew Sgt Moffitt had been. He regretted the rules that forbid the carrying of any kind of weapon by off duty personnel briefly and then long hone skills kicked in. As a boy he had learned to hunt in the mountains of Tennessee, he could move quickly and quietly when he needed to and he needed to now to avoid the brawling Germans.

Although he moved carefully he found himself almost tripping over the English Sergeant. "Sorry Sarge." he said with a wry grin as he bent to give the fallen man a hand up.

Looking around he saw the young german soldier struggling with a far larger advesary, and sprang to the boys aid

Sturm couldn't be held back for long and quickly shook Thomas loose. He turned and grabbed Thomas by the throat, choking him briefly before striking him hard against the face with his fist. Thomas went down to the ground once more and writhed in quiet agony on the dirt. There was no more fighting that he could do, and even if he was able to get up, most of the fighting had already ended.

Thomas wasn't able to relax though. Outside of his current physical pain, fear plauged his spirit for he knew that the others would surely come after him now.

Tully waded into the big German with a grim eagerness, being one of the youngest in family of eight, having five older brothers taught you how to fight if nothing else. Sprinting toward the larger man he drove a shoulder into the man's solor plexus driving the air out of his lungs and throwing him to the ground.

An armed American soldier moved in to take charge of the German Pow, and Troy gestured at Thomas who lay half dazed on the ground. "Give him a hand, he wasn't in on this. Where's Moffitt?"

Tully jerked a thumb over his right shoulder "He's back there somewhere, I gave him a hand."

Troy straightened and bit back a groan, wrapping his right arm around his ribs and moved stiffly in the direction Tully indicated, Hitchcock followed along behind, a concerned frown furrowing his brow. Catching Tully's eye he flipped his chin in his Sergeants direction.

Tully followed his friends gaze and studied the dark haired man as he walked away, and he too noticed that the normal fluid movement was gone. "You okay Sarge?" he called after the departing non-com.

Troy raised a hand "Yeah, fine." he replied in a tone that indicated the subject was not open for discussion.

At first Thomas didn't want to move but when Tully offered him a hand, he willingly accepted it and allowed himself to be pulled up. His entire right side of his face throbbed. At any moment Thomas felt like he was going to vomit. He staggered for a moment, then straightened as he looked at Troy.

Shame filled him as Thomas moved towards him. He tried to take hold of Troy's arm so he could be used as a crutch, but naturally, Troy wanted none of that. It wasn't as though he was accepting help from his own people anyways. Still, the man was hurt and Thomas felt that it was all his fault.

"I am sorry," he said softly. "You don't look so good."

A whistle suddenly caught his attention and Thomas saw Karlstrom glaring at him from nearby. He made a sliding motion across his throat and pointed at Thomas. The young German cringed but remained by the American's side. What had been gained here? No one was set free and worse, there were casualties.

"Wo ist Jack?" Thomas asked quietly, turning and looking for the Englander. "Jack?"

Although he didn't understand the words, the intent of them was clear as day in the boy's eyes and on his distraught face. Troy coughed, and tried to breath shallowly to avoid stressing the bruised and definately broken ribs on his right side. "Not your fault kid, but you sure know how to to throw one hell of a party." he laughed and swore at the sharp stab as his rib's reminded him of his in-descretion.

Glancing over his shoulder he glared at the young Private that was sheep dogging him. "Knock-it off Hitch, go see if you can find Moffitt a hand. I'm sure his friend here would appreciate knowing he was ok."

When the fight was going and Tully helped him up, the world was still spinning for Jack. He mumbled something about not calling him Sarge before Tully disappeared.

He went of on a rather slow walk to find his friends. The entire time Jack was wincing because of all the blows that he had received. This time Hitch found him. "I'm fine" Jack replied before Hitch got the words out. It was written all over the private's face. "Just show me where they are."

Troy looked up at Moffitt's approach, "You look like you went three rounds with a pile driver and lost. Your young friend's been worried about you, might want to let him know you're okay. I'm going to check in with command see if there's anything they need us to do here."

Troy had said something to Thomas that he didn't fully understand, but the one thing that he recognised was, "It's not your fault.," and that made him feel only slightly better. His smile was sad as an Allied guard came up to him and escorted him back to his tent. It wasn't likely that he would recieve any medical attention for it only looked as though he had been cut across the face.

But as soon as Thomas got back to the tent, he took one look around and collapsed on the spot. The guard who had escorted him there hadn't even checked to make sure that Thomas was all right and was already going back to make sure all the other guards were all right. As Thomas lay on the floor, unconsciousness slowly pulling him under, Thomas thought about the football match that never was and wished at this moment, that he had at least been able to retrieve the ball.

Making his way slowly toward the CP Troy stumbled across the soccer ball, sitting forlornly by the wall of one of the bombed buildings. Scooping it up Troy wondered at the fact that Thomas had not asked about his most prized and more than likely only possession outside the clothing on his back.
Tossing a look back over his shoulder all the guards were busy re-establishing order, herding the POW's back to their respective tents, tucking the ball under his arm and continued toward the CP. Sorrinson was in command here and liked to keep the LRDP's in his sector very busy, more than seventy-two hours of down time was almost un-heard of unless you were wounded, and Troy was itching to get back out there. He had been doing this smash and run job for so long, that more that three days down and he started to get cabin fever. He knew that it wasn't the same for most of the men out here but Troy functioned far better on his own, this desert had become his whole world.

As Thomas lay on the dirt floor of the tent, he clung to his memories of playing football with his mates in the street and on whatever available field that they could find. All he had wanted earlier was a relief from the war, but it would seem that even being a prisoner was dangerous to his health. As unconsciousness finally won, Thomas released his thoughts and faded with them, becoming very vulnerable to Eckers and Karlstrom, who were still lurking nearby.

* * * * *
In the far reaches of the desert, Hauptmann Dietrich rested against the boulder that had been his shade through the hottest part of the day. The sound of laughter had steadily been lulling him to sleep, as sincere jubilation often did during the war. With casual interest, Dietrich looked towards the small river that ran through the rocky gorge and smiled at his soldiers who had found refuge in the cool water.

For once they weren't running for their lives nor were they destroying anything. There was a lull in the war and for a change, Dietrich had found himself the perfect little oasis for his soldiers to rest and to recover. It wasn't the city with women and drink, nor did this place afford comfortable quarters, but at least it wasn't visible on any map, Allied or German. It was simply a little haven.

At that moment something small and round hit his side lightly. A football. With an amused smirk, Dietrich took the ball and tossed it over his shoulder.

"Captain, won't you join us?" one asked.

Dietrich looked back at them and just frowned. He wasn't terribly into the sport before he joined the military and he certainly wasn't into it now. However, seeing the ball reminded him of a certain boy soldier whom he had gone out of his way to protect and eventually had given over to the Allies to keep him alive. There wasn't a day that went by where Dietrich didn't wonder if he had betrayed young Thomas and if the kid would ever forgive him. All Dietrich had wanted was to save one young life.

"You don't look like a picture yourself" Jack replied to Troy with weak grin. His eyes looked worried when he mentioned Thomas. "How and where is he?" One of the guys pointed to the tent that he had been taken to.

He found him on the floor and immediately checked him over. "Thomas! Sprechen Sie mit mir. Wo sind Sie Schmerz?" Jack tried lifting him up but couldn't.

Getting no response, he went to the tent entrance and shouted to a nearby guard to get a medic. When the soldier started arguing he snapped at him to get a move on. Being a sergeant had its advantages. A few minutes later the camp medic came running in and seeing Jack thought that something was wrong with him, but he motioned to Thomas.

When the medic gestured to Thomas, who was still laying on the dirt but now on his back thanks to Moffitt helping him, the medic paused and frowned as though he had just smelled something bad. It had been for an Allied soldier he had rushed over for, not a German.

"He's a Kraut," replied the medic. "I thought you were the one needing the attention, Sergeant. I didn't run all this way to help this one! Those Krauts caused a lot of damage and a lot of our guys are wounded! They started it, we can let them take care of their own."

The medic wasn't about to say that one of the guards was in such a bad way that it was highly unlikely that he would survive. Most of it though was embarassment at the fact that it had been he who had failed to notice the medical instruments disappearing from the tent. Most of which still had yet to be recovered.

"Besides," said the medic, backing away. "Even the Krauts have suffered worse than him. Do you really want to fix him up just to have him get interrogated for his role in all of this?"

At loose ends Hitch and Tully trailed along after Moffitt, and were puzzled by the Sergeants obvious distress over the state of the young german soldier. In fact they were totally confused as to just how Moffitt and Troy were involved with the afternoons activity. They had noticed Troy headed in the direction of the CP. Knowing him as they did, there was no doubt in their mind that Sarg was trying to rustle up some work for them. The man could never just simply relax and enjoy down time.

They heard Moffitts urgent call for a medic and peered inside the dim tent. The young german that had been headed in their direction just before the attempted break out lay on the floor barely conscious, with the Englishman bent over him speaking in soft German. They even held the flap aside when the medic came bustling up. To say they were shocked when the Medic had refused to treat the obviously injured man was an understatement.

When the medic attempted to exit the tent the two privates casually blocked his exit.
Leaning against a tent support Tully smiled, removing the ever present match stick from his mouth, smiling slightly he flicked a look at Hitch then back at the Medic. "If I remember correctly refusing aid to an injured prisoner is a violation of the Geneva convention, isnt that right Sergeant?" he asked in his soft southern drawl.

Jack glowered as he listened to the medic. "Quit stating the obvious. I was there" he snapped. "If he hadn't come to help me I wouldn't be here. So yes I want you to fix him up."

He hadn't noticed Hitch and Tully until they stopped the medic from leaving. He threw them a grateful look. "Hitch, come over here and help me get him up" he said, nodding in Thomas's direction. Jack couldn't lift him up on his own and didn't want the young man laying there on the ground. He figured that Tully could handle the medic on his own if need be.

The medic resisted glaring at Moffitt and Tully but he snapped back, "That's a real laugh! You guys go out there and shoot them up, and then they tear the joint up, now you want to help this one? You guys are really something."

To Tully he replied, "And to answer your question, there's nothin' in the Geneva Convention about makin' sure your own boys are taken care of before these lousy Krauts. What if it was a choice between your buddies here or that one... who would you choose?"

The medic moved from the door but made no move to help Thomas. "Besides, the Doctor is busy helping real patients. Maybe when you see what a prisoner did to one of our boys you'll understand why I don't care if this one lives or dies."

At Moffitt's request, Hitch went to help Moffitt pick up Thomas, though he knew that Moffitt shouldn't be helping anyone. Without even asking, Tully came over to him and helped. This was how a proper team functioned, not a disfunctional one like the medical staff here.
