Tully helped Hitch lift the semi-conscious boy to a near-by bunk, the medics remarks burned them deeply. There were times they werr put in such positions, and were eternally thankful that the final decision had been dropped in Troy's lap. There had been times when they had been forced to beg, borrow, steal or threaten at gun point help from the German medics, but they had gotten it. They had learned that not all Germans were not kill-crazy like some would have them believe. Take the strange relationship between them and Capt. Dietrich, there had been times when he had them dead to rights, and had turned a blind eye to their escape, or some how managed to accidently leave the thing they so desperately needed momentarily unguarded. There had been times too when they held Dietrich's life in their hands and had let him go, even helped him. The two privates didn't fully understand the synergy between Troy and Dietrich, two men that had been put in positions they'd never asked for but couldn't turn away from.

Looking back over his shoulder at the medic he gave the over-bearing, pompas man a smile, he had no respect for a man that though himself better than others, when they others were out there getting themselvese shot up for their country. Faced with men like this he couldnt wait to get back out into the desert

Troy stood in front of Capt. Sorrinson's desk jaw clenched, while the man hauranged at him about the attempted break out. He had simply come in for orders as their seventy two hours was just about up and ne wanted to make sure they had whatever they need in the way of supplies and ammo before they headed out on patrol.

When Tully and Hitch entered the tent, the doctor didn't even look up from his current patient as he said, "Find a cot for him; I will be right over."

True to his word, the doctor came over as soon as he had fixed the bandage on the one wounded American soldier. When he saw that it was a German that Hitch and Tully had brought in, the doctor frowned deeply.

"I was hoping not to see him in here again." He crouched by the bed and looked over the cut on Thomas's face before examining him. "Perhaps if I knew what happened to him I could have a better understanding on how to help him."

As the soldiers explained, the doctor moved down Thomas's body and undid his tunic and pushed his shirt out of the way. He gave a little, "Aha.," at what he saw and then rose to get something. His absense allowed the others to see a bandage on Thomas's side that had nearly been soaked through with fresh blood.

Jack followed Hitch and Tully to the tent and stood around watching, trying not to look anxious. "Again? How many times has he been here before?" What the doctor had said puzzled him. Did he mean when Thomas first came to the camp or was there more to it than that.

"He was in the fight..." Jack trailed off had his eyes widened at the sight of the bandage. Now a new question was forming in his mind. What was the bandage from.

The doctor came back with a fresh bandage and immediately took off the old one and began cleaning away the blood. He listened to Moffitt but only replied in quiet acknowledgement as his concentration was on examining the previous wound. After a moment he straightened and looked at Thomas, who was still unconscious.

"Everything is in order there," he replied as though that would explain everything. When he caught that rare look of concern from Moffitt, the doctor chuckled quietly and said, "He's going to be just fine. He only managed to open the wound again but not so much that it ruined the stitches. They were due to come out in a few days but now, I say he'll have to keep them in just a bit longer."

He looked back at Thomas and put his hand on his brow, still smiling. "He gets to you, easily. When he first came here, I was told that he had been involved in an incident with your unit and nearly died due to shock and bloodloss, but he was a fighter and didn't give up. Well they got him patched up but during his transfer to a more permanent camp, the Germans attacked the convoy and freed their prisoners.

"That's when his story gets interesting, because supposedly he helped an Allied nurse get away from some Germans but it put his life in danger, so his Captain surrendered him over to our guys, but not before those men caught up with him and stabbed him, which is how he got this." The doctor pointed at the wound on Thomas's side. "Once Hartmann realised that his commander and the nurse were both safe, all he ever asked was if he'd still be able to play his, soccer... and the answer was, as it is now, if he can keep down for a few weeks so it can heal, he'll be able to play like nothing had happened."

He chuckled again and glanced over at Moffitt. "I don't see any other wounds on him and I wouldn't doubt that him being in a fight, getting punched in the head a few times, maybe, combined with the pain from his wound re-opening, probably put him in this state. But not to worry, Sergeant. He's going to be just fine. Five to one I'm bettin' the kid will be asking some question relating to that 'soccer' thing when he wakes up."

The doctor finished fixing the new bandage on Thomas's side before cleaning his hands. He then patted Moffitt's shoulder and said, "You did good bringing him here though. After what happened, I don't think our boys have much sympathy for wounded Germans. But here, well, it's hard to see a distinction in sides when you're staring into the face of someone who looks like your own son back home."

Troy emerged from Sorrisons tent unscathed, with orders for his squad to move out within forty-eight hours on a tightly classified mission, there would be complete radio silence and no support should they run into trouble, that was not what concerned or puzzled him, this was their specialty, get in cause as much destruction and confusion as possible and get out with as much intell as they could as quickly as they could. What concerned and puzzled him was that they were to bring a passenger along, a passenger in the form of the young german soldier known as Thomas.

He rubbed his eyes tiredly, the headache that had resulted from being hit in the head earlier had not re-ceeded and in fact had only increased until it felt like someone had their thumbs pressed firmly behind his eyes and and were trying to force them out of his skull. Standing in the Captains tent for the last half hour, bent over a make-shift desk staring at maps in the dim light had not helped either his head or his ribs. He was sure that his whole right side would be coming out in a spectacular rainbow of colors with the bruising he had sustained in the fight, he could feel the broken rib grate as he move and swore softly. What he could use right now was a couple shots of good Bourbon and a hot tub, what he would settle for was some aspirin from the Doc. and headed in the direction the the med tent.

For a little while nothing changed with Thomas. Then, his fingers gripped the blanket that had been placed over him and he groaned weakly. His brow wrinkled with sudden pain or worry and he asked very quietly, "Wo ist mein Ball?"

The doctor looked at Thomas and smirked. "Told you he would ask about soccer."

Thomas tried to open his eyes but still felt groggy from all that had happened. Mostly, he was scared to be conscious. By being awake it meant that the danger had returned and he'd once more be put back with the other soldiers, who more than likely were well-aware of his decisions to help the Allies during that riot. Thomas didn't want to think of what they were going to do to him now.

"Mutti, Mutti..." Thomas cried weakly. "Ich brauch dich..." His hand went to his injured side where he felt the fresh bandage and immediately started crying softly.

Jack listened to the doctor. Glad that Thomas would be alright yet wondering for how long. Practically the whole camp knows who he sides with now.

Thomas's story fascinated him and he realized that he did get attached to him. Even though he said he wouldn't he did. It was hard not to.

He was relieved to know that the young soldier would still be able to play. The short time that Jack had spent with him, he realized how much it meant to Thomas. Jack chuckled when he asked for his ball, but when Thomas started crying he looked at him sympathetically.

"Es ist gut jetzt" he said quietly, patting him gently on the shoulder. "Es schmerzt mich, wenn Sie schreien."

The gentle, friendly pat on his shoulder brought Thomas completely into awareness and he blinked through his tears up at Moffitt. Maybe there was still hope in the world for him. Feeling a bit ashamed that he, a grown man, should be crying for his mother like this, cleared his throat and tried to act like nothing had happened.

Turning his head a little, Thomas asked, "Ist alles in ordnung, Jack?"

When Thomas addressed Moffitt by his first name, the doctor hid his smile. He should have known that Thomas would have affected yet another person. However, despite Thomas's generally easy-going attitude and eagerness to make friends, not everyone was welcome to this, especially the war-hardened German prisoners and those devoted to the Reich. And though Thomas was not a threat to the Allies, not even they were eager to be sympathetic with him.

He was a German and that was all they needed to dislike him.

Being so into the sport though, Thomas knew that not even in football he would be the favourite of all. Everyone had their dislikes, he even knew that from his own interests. However, this was more than football. This was war and the line between sides was divided by the warring politicians. There was no place safe for him.

Fippining the flap of the tent back Troy ducked and stepped into the relief of the dim interior, the hard glare of the sun had been like a hammer to the back of his head with the headache he had even with the brim of his trade mark Australian Bush hat pulled low over his sensitive eyes.

"Hey Doc!" he called "Got some asprin?" sitting on a canvas chair he rested his head in his hands.

Tully and Hitch who had been in with Moffitt and Thomas looked at each other in surprise, the last place they had thought to hear Troy's voice was inside a med tent. Concerned the two of them stepped through the privacy drape into the small waiting area.

Troy looked up when the drape moved aside and was mildly surprised to find Tully and Hitchcock step through. "What are you two doing in here?' he aske gruffly of the two privates

Hitch grinned at Tully and then looked back at his Sergeant, "We could ask the samething Sarge."

Tully gestured behind him "Moffitt had us bring that kid in, looks like someone laid into him but good, found on the ground inside his tent half conscious. Doc says it's not the first time he's been in here, seems his fellow prisoners aren't too fond of him." The lanky blonde soldier studied his Segeant for a moment, something was off about him, moving closer he noticed a dusky purple/red bruise that covered the other mans face from ust above his left eye to just below the cheekbone. "What happened to you?"

Troy grimaced "Long story."

"Well I'd like to hear it Sergeant." a deep bass rumbled as the Doctor appeared followed by the final member of the Rat Patrol.
